“Serving Our Community” – These words were aptly displayed at the bottom of the Debs Store calendar handed out to customers every year. This was a guiding principle for my grandparents, father and uncle and it remains such for the current partners of Debs Store. The corner of Florida Avenue and 5th Street in Jacksonville, FL (also known as Debs Store) is special to generations of Eastside residents and members of my family.  While I’m excited to present this page, the true impact of Debs Store on the lives of residents is best captured by visits to the Eastside. The stories told by current and former Eastsiders best reflect the “why” for continuing the Debs Store mission of “Serving Our Community.”

Joseph DebsI am thrilled to partner with LiftJax, Goodwill of North Florida, VyStar and others to ensure the Debs Store tradition of “Service” continues for current and future generations.

“A community is democratic only when the humblest and weakest person can enjoy the highest civil, economic, and social rights that the biggest and most powerful possess.” ~ A. Philip Randolph

How fitting that Debs Store is located on Florida Avenue which is also known as A Philip Randolph Boulevard in sections south of the Store. Mr. Randolph might well have been referencing the residents of Jacksonville’s Eastside when he spoke these words.  While many residents and neighborhoods of Jacksonville and its surrounding counties are prospering, the section of town that includes the road with his name struggles to share in the area’s prosperity.

I can remember a different Eastside, the Eastside of the 1960’s and 1970’s bustling with activities.  A trip down Florida Avenue on a Friday or Saturday was filled with stops at other grocery stores, butcher shops, barber shops, homes and visits on street corners. Time at Debs Store was as much social as it was commercial. I knew the stories of the families of those that came in during the day. I knew which sport teams they followed and where their brothers and sisters were going to college. The Store was full of fresh fruits, vegetables, meats and many other products and was bustling with business. It was difficult to close the doors at the scheduled closing times due to number of customers wanting “just one more item.”

My family, my partners and I believe current and future residents of Eastside deserve the setting that I recall from fifty years ago. And, we believe a renovated and expanded Debs Store will be the spark that brings back this setting.  Starting in early 2024, a market focusing on fresh foods and quality service will reopen in Debs Store. The new market will be larger than the original Store providing customers with a first-class buying experience. Additionally, the second-floor learning center operated by Goodwill will provide job and learning skill opportunities to Eastside residents. VyStar Credit Union will place an ATM and offer financial advisory services through the new Debs Store.  Finally, every detail of the renovated and expanded Debs Store has been carefully evaluated to ensure an iconic presence at the corner of Florida Avenue and 5th Street.

My family and I are proud to play a part in bringing back Debs Store. We are very appreciative of the partners who are making this project a reality – Lift Jax, Goodwill of North Florida, VyStar and many other contributors. Read more about their contributions here.
